TEST DRIVE 02

TEST DRIVE

Hello, and welcome to the second Pluviosa Test Drive!

This Test Drive corresponds to Days 4-12 in the ship calendar, and will run until around the game's next major event. You can get a better idea what's going on in the most recent Game Update which covers Days 5-8. Currently, character IC housing is not in operation yet; it is expected to open on Day 9 (part of the way through the Test Drive period). Otherwise, the ship is largely in the state described on the Setting page and in other game information.

Test Drive threads involving characters who are accepted are considered canon to the events of the game unless otherwise agreed by players/mods. Pluviosa does not do welcome mingle logs nor does it have any kind of in-character welcome information, making your test drive threads your character's arrival to the game setting. That said, mod-run interactions such as formal exploration and/or interactions with the Ship as an NPC are not available on the Test Drive.

It is advised that potential players familiarize themselves with the Premise page, the Rules/Session Zero page, and at least the first few paragraphs of the Setting page. As Pluviosa is a horror game, we especially encourage players to be aware of the content warnings that will be major themes of the game. If you have any further questions, you can ask them on the QUESTIONS header in the comments!

If you're test driving a character, you're welcome to join the game Discord and hang out and meet your fellow players!

ARRIVAL - LIKE THE RAIN

You wake up. You remember waking up, right? In another place, another time...

There's blood running down your fingers. Outside, the rain isn't pounding, yet, just a gentle patter...

Or is it?

As characters gain fuller awareness of their surroundings, they will realize that there is, in fact, no blood on their hands (save any that might have already been there). It feels as though they lost focus for a moment and hallucinated, but the hallucination ended with them somewhere else entirely.

There is not actually the sound of rain. If characters are near enough to a window, balcony, or even a hole in the ceiling, they will find that it is cloudless, beaming sunlight outside. The emptiness in the distance rolls on and on, completely absent any signs of life.

That being, of course, because the signs of life are all in here. Characters might wake up on any of the decks on the upper side of the ship - anywhere that isn't the cafeteria or lounge where previous arrivals spend most of their time is free game. This also means, of course, that they have the jungle of plants to contend with...

LIGHTS ON, SHOW START

Most areas in the ship are dark when characters arrive. That doesn't mean that they stay dark. Occasionally, lights overhead flicker on and off for a few minutes at a time.

The problem with this isn't the lights themselves (cool white and kind of industrial). It's the reaction that the addition of the extra light causes the plants in the dark areas of the ship that's cause for alarm. To describe the growth as explosive isn't an understatement - vines, saplings, and even thicker branches surge with growth, pushing outwards towards the distant sunlight and upwards towards the flickering bulbs.

The growth is sudden enough to take all but the most aware characters by surprise, and if they're in the wrong corner of the room, it's very easy to get tangled up, wedged in by a tree trunk, or otherwise trapped against some corner or wall. If you're lucky and skilled, you might be able to cut yourself out from there (or break down the wall you're shoved up against), but otherwise, there's only one solution left.

Yell like your life depends on it, and hope somebody out there can hear you. And that whoever hears is someone who is inclined to help, rather than leaving you there. Or worse.

Oh, and the lights flicker back off after a few minutes, of course. Hopefully you're not waiting for rescue in the dark (with the smell of mold and the general faint dampness of the forest) for too long.

TILT-A-WORLD

Occasionally, the whole ship tilts.

This is not simply the side to side motion of a ship on the water (or the equivalent motion brought on by the way this particular ship moves); it's an extremely forward or backward tilt that sends things sliding across the floor if they aren't secured by roots or something else. Unlike storm-tossed ships, the tilt is somewhat prolonged - rather than everything sliding back and forth a couple times a minute, the tilt lasts for five, ten, maybe as much as twenty minutes.

Although it's not enough to knock a well-balanced character off their feet, it's quite likely that new arrivals will not be particularly on-balance. And attempting to traverse the ship with the tilt is a tall order... especially when the ship's angle does unexpectedly change... to the exact opposite direction. All that goes up the mountain must go back down, and a glance out the windows reveals that that's exactly what's going on, as the ship progresses across a mountainous landscape without real regard for the concept of mountain passes.

And for characters who have managed to make their way to the "civilized" parts of the ship, namely the cafeteria and the lounge above it... None of the furniture in these areas is secured. The cafeteria carts under the direct control of the Ship don't seem as inclined to go anywhere, but the tables and chairs in the cafeteria and the couches and armchairs upstairs... Well, it's a good thing both spaces are surrounded by railings. Large chunks of tree trunk also still littler the lounge, sliding back and forth and occasionally rolling with great force across the floor.

Better hold on tight.

SOMETHING WHISTLING

While wandering around the ship's interior, characters might occasionally hear a person whistling.

The sound always seems to be coming from just around the corner, but it sounds alive in a way that other sounds don't. Maybe more alive, even, than the rustle of leaves, the occasional drip of water, and the sounds of things sliding back and forth across the grimy, leaf-covered floors. The whistler, whoever they are, doesn't actively respond if called out to - but the whistling does pause, as though indicating that the call was heard, before starting up again.

If characters choose to follow the whistling, they're inevitably led to the same place - somewhere overlooking the great gap down the middle of the ship, whether an internal suite's balcony, one of the bridges crossing between the two halves, or one of the hallways that runs alongside it. Once they're there, there's no whistler in sight; however, characters will be filled with the overwhelming urge to look over the edge of the railing and down into the lower parts of the ship.

Exactly what they experience after looking down varies. Some will hallucinate that they've fallen over the side, feeling their balance go haywire and seeing the floor rushing up to them right up until the moment of "impact," at which everything returns to normal. Some will feel a stranger's hands on their shoulders, threatening to push them over with a great shove that goes through them with incorporeal fingers. Some will just hear unidentifiable laughter right up close to their ears, and experience the distinct sensation that there's someone laughing at them, in a haha-made-you-look kind of way.

But whatever happens, when they look up, there's no one there - or at least not anyone that physically close to them. The one good thing about being drawn to the middle section of the ship by whatever prankster this is is that it makes it a lot easier to run into people if you're all drawn to the same, highly visible place.

And at least the other person is flesh and blood, right? Probably.

Lucia Corina sighs. "I should probably have someone with me--it went badly, when the lights came on the first time." Her face shadows for a moment, but she forces it back. "I just hate being so useless."

"Parchment... not that I know of. I think any such aboard the ship has long decayed. And it's too dear for me to have had any in my pack."

"I don't think you're useless..." He tilts his head. "I know plenty of people who aren't fighters that are far more useful than some of us who are."

Hm... "I guess I'll have to improvise."

"I can't do anything else, either. I don't understand the ship, or how it functions, or how it was made. Others had seen the like before. Half the time when someone tries to explain something to me I comprehend nothing. It's just all so alien." She shakes her head. "Nevermind. If I cannot be a historian here, I remain a songbird."

"I think someone else has ink," she says, indicating the section of wall with Chinese characters scrawled on it. "But I'm not sure who." Or why they were writing on the wall.

"I imagine that if you were to explain some of your own star to someone then they would have trouble understanding what you mean as well." He's not going to go into the whole backstory of how his star is how it is. Or the alien dragons. Or the robot superweapon. Or many other things. Not unless they come up.

He turns and squints at the characters. Gods, it looks like... Hingan script? In some ways, at least. He can't quite make it out. "I'll have to look around. I believe making ink is not terribly complicated. I can't say the same for parchment that isn't made out of animal hide, though I suppose that has its own complications as well."

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-04 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Some of it, I suppose, but I feel quite the backwater savage at times." She grimaces.

"Animals, would be the sticking point there. I don't believe there are any. The meat in the food is apparently... grown in some manner of strange fruit? If you can make or find ink, I suppose you could imitate whoever did that in simply writing upon the walls. Mercy knows there are enough walls available."

"Oh, I feel the same. When I left the Wood it was extremely overwhelming. I'm somewhat 'caught up' now, but I still get surprised by what I don't know."

He taps a nail on the table, thinking. "Fruit... with meat? That's a new one. Though it feels in ill taste to write on the walls, I may have to resort to that." Maybe he can carve into the trees? Though with his knife it's still likely to be too difficult to write anything longer than a word or two.

"That's... somewhat reassuring, thank you." Lucia Corina absently pushes her hair back out of her face, which may draw attention to all the leaves and twigs in it. "I am unused to being so out of my depth, except for the time I lost when--" She cuts herself off, blinking hard, and shifts away from that thought.

"The fruit with meat is very strange. It's ground meat? One of the oddest things I've ever seen. What is it you wish to write about?"
paladinforhire: (what in the hells is that)

[personal profile] paladinforhire 2024-04-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't mind the leaves and twigs in it. The outburst doesn't really bother him... he's more curious than anything, but he isn't going to push. "... Well, I was thinking that if there's people who are looking for people to accompany them on adventures then I might as well advertise."

It might not be needed, but it's been a while since he's needed to look for work.

"It may be as easy to simply offer in person--there are only around a dozen of us, though I suppose given your new arrival there may yet soon be more." Her mouth twists wryly. "There are those I certainly could have asked, I simply couldn't bear being a burden. Though I suppose if I am trapped by the plants again I shall be more of one."

[personal profile] paladinforhire 2024-04-06 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"... You do know that you're probably just going to worry people more if you go without asking someone, right?" Maybe that's a little harsh, but he's never been one to sugarcoat things without a reason. "If it's known that you're no fighter, it might just be easier to ask someone."
luciacorina: a pale woman with wild curly black hair with leaves stuck in it (Default)

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-06 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Lucia Corina sighs. "You are... not incorrect. Casper would probably be concerned if he knew I was wandering off by myself, at the very least. I just... want to be able to do something."
paladinforhire: (look up)

[personal profile] paladinforhire 2024-04-06 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I get it. I don't like being sat in one place either. I prefer doing over resting." He reaches over and pats her hand. His own are calloused and his nails are a little long, but they're otherwise warm. "- Ah. I should have asked. My apologies."
luciacorina: (angelmaker)

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-07 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not usually in one place for long, anymore. Not since-- I've just traveled, always. I mislike being stuck here, but there isn't anywhere else to be. It... may be eating at me." She looks down, slightly ashamed.

"Asked?" Lucia Corina looks politely baffled. She's not sure what he would have asked about. It doesn't occur to her that someone might bother to seek permission for something as simple as a touch on the hand.

"It's not your fault. It's difficult when you're tied down, isn't it? Either because you're stuck by the location or because of duties... it can be terrible."

He blinks in confusion. "Ah... before touching you. I know some people mislike being touched in any way."

"I don't like being... confined. Not being able to leave." No one likes those things, of course, but the haunted look in her eyes may convey that she feels a little more strongly on the subject. "Especially after being... abducted by some still-unknown force." She is not enjoying her life echoing in this way.

She looks down at her hand and back at him. "I... oh. It... hadn't occurred to me that anyone might bother to ask. I don't mind. It's... reassuring. Sometimes I... lose track of things. Real people can be-- grounding."
paladinforhire: (let him speak)

[personal profile] paladinforhire 2024-04-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"It's terrible. Even after I met the one behind my abduction I still dislike it." They're on better terms now but he is never letting that man forget what he did. At the worst possible time, too! "... But if it's all right with you, that's all right. I'm not one for a lot of physical contact, but..."

Well. Sometimes it's needed. He's seen enough warriors with far-off looks. Plenty of people in Eorzea who weren't warriors had lost a lot as well, be it from war or from the Calamity. "I understand." And he sounds like he means it, too. He keeps his hand over hers, holding it gently. "We do have to rely on each other in a place like this, do we not? Perhaps I'm a young fool, but I would like you to think you can rely on me."
luciacorina: (sad)

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-10 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
And he's been abducted too... She's never really had anyone understand, before she found herself here. A small blessing, among the unpleasantness. "I... knew well who had abducted me before, but... at least I knew what was expected of me, why it had occurred." She looks down, the fingers of her free hand unconsciously twitching a little in a potion that would play her zither if it was out.

"...Thank you." Lucia Corina looks back up at him with a shaky smile. She may be a fool as well for trusting people she's just met when they say to, but she wants to be able to trust people. She doesn't want to have to build new walls to hide behind, a different kind of prison, one that would travel with her, inescapable.

"Mm. I knew I wasn't the person they wanted - they missed their mark." He can't blame him for wanting to grab the Warrior of Light, but would it have killed him to do it right the first time? ... Probably.

He pulls his hand back and taps his nails on the table. "It's all right. I'm trying to do what I can with what I have." He doesn't have much here, though he does have - he looks in his pockets for a moment and pulls out a small egg-shaped stone. "Good, it's still there. ... I'll need this sooner rather than later, I suppose." ... He should explain. "It allows me to use my healing abilities." Or at least a lot more easily.
luciacorina: (sad)

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Lucia Corina huffs a humorless shadow of a laugh, turning her head away, hair falling to cover her face. "I was exactly what she was looking for."

"We have... a great deal in some ways, a very little in others. When one doesn't have to worry about food or shelter... what then?" She eyes the stone with interest, her hand unconsciously rising a little towards it before she catches herself. "You can heal?"
paladinforhire: (let him speak)

[personal profile] paladinforhire 2024-04-11 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
He's curious, but he doesn't push further. He might be brash but he's not completely tactless.

Though he does pull the stone away slightly - he trusts her, but it's extremely valuable. "I can. I can channel the -" How does he explain healing? He just kind of does it - the theory is a little beyond him. "... Essentially I can speed up the natural healing process by putting more energy into it for the body to use for that purpose. Other healers use other methods, but the Elementals of the Shroud saw fit for me to be able to use the secrets they hold."

There's also the memories locked within the crystal but that's... harder to explain. "The Elementals are powerful... elemental beings that dictate life within the forest known as the Black Shroud. Their wrath can be... terrible. Or so I've been told, anyway - but I know better than to disrespect the keepers of a forest."
luciacorina: (2)

[personal profile] luciacorina 2024-04-12 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Healers are very important! I'm glad you have the... tools you need for it. I don't know if anyone has needed healing so far we've been here, but... if things had gone a little differently with the plants, someone easily could have. It's... reassuring." It's not clear entirely how much she noticed her abortive reach for the stone.

She nods at his explanation. "I certainly wouldn't want to disrespect the spirits of a forest."

"It's... something I took up to protect the person I look up to. They tend to take the van in our operations, and so I... worried about them getting hurt. I took up conjury, and it seems I was noticed." It's kind of confusing to explain, so he won't.

In nay case, at least no one's gotten seriously hurt... "Well, if someone does need healing they can come to me. I can heal... a lot of things. Not everything, but quite a bit."
