TEST DRIVE 02

TEST DRIVE

Hello, and welcome to the second Pluviosa Test Drive!

This Test Drive corresponds to Days 4-12 in the ship calendar, and will run until around the game's next major event. You can get a better idea what's going on in the most recent Game Update which covers Days 5-8. Currently, character IC housing is not in operation yet; it is expected to open on Day 9 (part of the way through the Test Drive period). Otherwise, the ship is largely in the state described on the Setting page and in other game information.

Test Drive threads involving characters who are accepted are considered canon to the events of the game unless otherwise agreed by players/mods. Pluviosa does not do welcome mingle logs nor does it have any kind of in-character welcome information, making your test drive threads your character's arrival to the game setting. That said, mod-run interactions such as formal exploration and/or interactions with the Ship as an NPC are not available on the Test Drive.

It is advised that potential players familiarize themselves with the Premise page, the Rules/Session Zero page, and at least the first few paragraphs of the Setting page. As Pluviosa is a horror game, we especially encourage players to be aware of the content warnings that will be major themes of the game. If you have any further questions, you can ask them on the QUESTIONS header in the comments!

If you're test driving a character, you're welcome to join the game Discord and hang out and meet your fellow players!

ARRIVAL - LIKE THE RAIN

You wake up. You remember waking up, right? In another place, another time...

There's blood running down your fingers. Outside, the rain isn't pounding, yet, just a gentle patter...

Or is it?

As characters gain fuller awareness of their surroundings, they will realize that there is, in fact, no blood on their hands (save any that might have already been there). It feels as though they lost focus for a moment and hallucinated, but the hallucination ended with them somewhere else entirely.

There is not actually the sound of rain. If characters are near enough to a window, balcony, or even a hole in the ceiling, they will find that it is cloudless, beaming sunlight outside. The emptiness in the distance rolls on and on, completely absent any signs of life.

That being, of course, because the signs of life are all in here. Characters might wake up on any of the decks on the upper side of the ship - anywhere that isn't the cafeteria or lounge where previous arrivals spend most of their time is free game. This also means, of course, that they have the jungle of plants to contend with...

LIGHTS ON, SHOW START

Most areas in the ship are dark when characters arrive. That doesn't mean that they stay dark. Occasionally, lights overhead flicker on and off for a few minutes at a time.

The problem with this isn't the lights themselves (cool white and kind of industrial). It's the reaction that the addition of the extra light causes the plants in the dark areas of the ship that's cause for alarm. To describe the growth as explosive isn't an understatement - vines, saplings, and even thicker branches surge with growth, pushing outwards towards the distant sunlight and upwards towards the flickering bulbs.

The growth is sudden enough to take all but the most aware characters by surprise, and if they're in the wrong corner of the room, it's very easy to get tangled up, wedged in by a tree trunk, or otherwise trapped against some corner or wall. If you're lucky and skilled, you might be able to cut yourself out from there (or break down the wall you're shoved up against), but otherwise, there's only one solution left.

Yell like your life depends on it, and hope somebody out there can hear you. And that whoever hears is someone who is inclined to help, rather than leaving you there. Or worse.

Oh, and the lights flicker back off after a few minutes, of course. Hopefully you're not waiting for rescue in the dark (with the smell of mold and the general faint dampness of the forest) for too long.

TILT-A-WORLD

Occasionally, the whole ship tilts.

This is not simply the side to side motion of a ship on the water (or the equivalent motion brought on by the way this particular ship moves); it's an extremely forward or backward tilt that sends things sliding across the floor if they aren't secured by roots or something else. Unlike storm-tossed ships, the tilt is somewhat prolonged - rather than everything sliding back and forth a couple times a minute, the tilt lasts for five, ten, maybe as much as twenty minutes.

Although it's not enough to knock a well-balanced character off their feet, it's quite likely that new arrivals will not be particularly on-balance. And attempting to traverse the ship with the tilt is a tall order... especially when the ship's angle does unexpectedly change... to the exact opposite direction. All that goes up the mountain must go back down, and a glance out the windows reveals that that's exactly what's going on, as the ship progresses across a mountainous landscape without real regard for the concept of mountain passes.

And for characters who have managed to make their way to the "civilized" parts of the ship, namely the cafeteria and the lounge above it... None of the furniture in these areas is secured. The cafeteria carts under the direct control of the Ship don't seem as inclined to go anywhere, but the tables and chairs in the cafeteria and the couches and armchairs upstairs... Well, it's a good thing both spaces are surrounded by railings. Large chunks of tree trunk also still littler the lounge, sliding back and forth and occasionally rolling with great force across the floor.

Better hold on tight.

SOMETHING WHISTLING

While wandering around the ship's interior, characters might occasionally hear a person whistling.

The sound always seems to be coming from just around the corner, but it sounds alive in a way that other sounds don't. Maybe more alive, even, than the rustle of leaves, the occasional drip of water, and the sounds of things sliding back and forth across the grimy, leaf-covered floors. The whistler, whoever they are, doesn't actively respond if called out to - but the whistling does pause, as though indicating that the call was heard, before starting up again.

If characters choose to follow the whistling, they're inevitably led to the same place - somewhere overlooking the great gap down the middle of the ship, whether an internal suite's balcony, one of the bridges crossing between the two halves, or one of the hallways that runs alongside it. Once they're there, there's no whistler in sight; however, characters will be filled with the overwhelming urge to look over the edge of the railing and down into the lower parts of the ship.

Exactly what they experience after looking down varies. Some will hallucinate that they've fallen over the side, feeling their balance go haywire and seeing the floor rushing up to them right up until the moment of "impact," at which everything returns to normal. Some will feel a stranger's hands on their shoulders, threatening to push them over with a great shove that goes through them with incorporeal fingers. Some will just hear unidentifiable laughter right up close to their ears, and experience the distinct sensation that there's someone laughing at them, in a haha-made-you-look kind of way.

But whatever happens, when they look up, there's no one there - or at least not anyone that physically close to them. The one good thing about being drawn to the middle section of the ship by whatever prankster this is is that it makes it a lot easier to run into people if you're all drawn to the same, highly visible place.

And at least the other person is flesh and blood, right? Probably.

Miku...doesn't know what U-Dex is. Some sort of device? Maybe there's still some sort of VIRTUAL presence here...she doesn't know how they'd be able to taste emotions in water, but she doesn't know how anyone would be able to do that. Water isn't something like a song, meant to convey that sort of information...she thinks.

But the people who made this place...they're gone? Maybe this is a SEKAI, then--one dead and abandoned. Miku doesn't know, after all, what happens to a SEKAI or its VIRTUAL SINGERS when the humans that they sang for make that final choice to...disappear. She's thought about it a lot, on those nights where Mafuyu couldn't find solace or safety even in her own room, even in her own bed, and would come to sleep on the cold and hard floor of the Empty SEKAI instead, Miku's lap her only pillow and Miku's voice her only comfort. She couldn't help but think it, even as she focused all her efforts and energy on trying to make Mafuyu better.

"I do not need to eat," she says. "But I can...it can be enjoyable." Miku herself doesn't really have any preferences, but food can be a form of connection for humans, both in terms of bonding through the physical action of consumption and the verbal discussion of the topic of food itself. "Kaito is fond of...ice cream." It's the first food related fact that pops into her mind. Even her own Kaito, full of rage and bitter poison, melts around the sweet dessert. Nightcord at 25:00 have not utilised this weakness to their advantage, not at all. Miku promises, cross her heart. "Do you like ice cream, Shang Beida-san?"

Hm. If she's not used to being physical... she may need to eat now in a way she didn't before. Maybe he can tempt her into something. Would she even recognize what hunger was? Does he need to rope someone else into the Conspiracy To Make Hatsune Miku Eat Food?

"I do like ice cream," he answers. "I haven't had it in a long time, though. The Ship made us shaved ice after the first day the plants started growing, though. It was nice. I'm really just waiting for the rice crop to mature... I miss rice."

Miku nods sagely. "I like rice," she says. She doesn't really taste much, when she eats--she reflects Mafuyu, and Mafuyu's depression has stopped her from tasting food for a very, very long time--but she isn't human. She's VIRTUAL, made from and for emotion, and when Kanade brings her Cup Noodles to share or Mizuki brings sushi, she can feel their love and regard for her in their offerings. She might not taste rice like Shang Beida-san does, but she tastes it all the same. (It tastes like Mizuki's laughter and Kanade's smiles and Ena rolling her eyes. It tastes like Mafuyu making friends.)

"So you're growing plants here...I've always wanted to do that," Miku says. "Are you growing any flowers?" Or just edible crops?

"Rice is... familiar. It's nice. Like, it's nice to have exotic food sometimes, but sometimes I just want to eat like, regular normal things, and not whatever the hell minestrone is?" He does know what minestrone is at this point, but that's not the point. Wait, he just swore at Hatsune Miku, oh god. "I, uh, sorry, I didn't mean to-- about my, uh, language. I'll. Try not to. Do that." He will probably fail. But it has to be some kind of crime to swear at Hatsune Miku.

"Well, the Ship is growing them. There's like, robots taking care of them? It's been doing it for like... centuries. I don't know if there are flowers as well as food, but we could ask the Ship?"

Miku nods to show her understanding, and then makes a sound that's very rare for her: she chuckles. "I know...what swearing is," she says, amused. She might be the Miku made for Mafuyu, but... "I have. Every song ever produced with the Miku voicebank. In my memory." Lots of swearing. Lots of sex, too, but Shang Beida-san might have a heart attack if she says that, she thinks. It's all just words to her. She doesn't mind being a vessel for someone else's expression, someone else's emotion. That's her job; what she was made for.

"We should...if plants grow here, then there should be beautiful ones, too." Miku thinks the Empty SEKAI has come a long way from the misty expanse of nothing it once was. But it's still not there yet. The frozen lake may finally be cracking, letting water through...but it's no place for flowers to bloom. It will be one day, though...but if Miku could see some fresh flowers earlier, while she's here, and not just look--but actually get to feel those silky soft petals with her own skin...

...oh. Well. "It's still not polite! And you're... Hatsune Miku! I should be polite!"

That... sounds like something she actually really wants. "Come on, then, Miku-mei--let's go to the agricultural decks and see if we can find anything pretty. Elevators are this way."

[personal profile] composingthefuture 2024-06-03 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
Politeness is good, Miku agrees--though she's not sure why Shang Beida-san stresses her name in regards to it. Miku is just Miku; she's no more or less important than any other person. Shang Beida-san does seem like the sort to stress over this sort of thing regardless, though, so she lets it drop.

She perks up at the mention of agricultural decks. "Please lead the way, Shang Beida-san!" A moment's pause, as she considers the general state of disrepair the ship appears to be in. "The elevators...work?" And are safe? She's VIRTUAL, so she probably doesn't have to worry about it too much, but Shang Beida-san is only human...

Look, he would way rather be overly polite to Hatsune Miku than be creepy. Like, he's gay and all, but he was still on the internet, there's like, ambient... yknow. Stuff.

"I think the elevators are one of the things the Ship kept best maintained, honestly? Maybe because it needs them to move its robot thingies around. They're fine, I've used them. And you have to use them to get to the agricultural decks, because there's some kind of... spatial... thing? Where there's multiple copies of the ship overlapping in the same space with different stuff on them? And that's where all the plants that are like, intentional plants are. Like this," he gestures vaguely at a wall, "these are like, incidental plants, right, it's actually trying to clear this shi- stuff out now that there are passengers, and some of us are working on that too." Just to illustrate the point, he pulls out Kao Ci and slashes a sword glare at the heaviest knot of plants nearby. "Just like, for something to do if nothing else, because it can be sort of boring here?" Sword put back away, he continues, "But there's also like, agriculture. Like, rice paddies and cornfields and shi- stuff. Intentional plants. They really seem to have put a ton of work into saving plants on this ship before whatever happened out there happened. And a lot of it is food but it may just be focusing on food because it's worried about feeding us? There's probably other plants. We could ask it or we could just go... look." Whoops, motormouth unlocked.

Miku actually doesn't find it all that hard to keep track of what Shang Beida-san is saying; she herself can speak much faster, after all. When it comes to audio, she's pure processing power.

"I wouldn't mind seeing more plants," Miku says. She loves plants. Nothing grows, in the Empty SEKAI. "I would not mind helping clear some out, either...if I could find tools." Her bare hands probably wouldn't be good for the job...

"If it gets boring here, Shang Beida-san...maybe I could perform a concert?" Food for thought. If the ship keeps the elevators well maintained, maybe there's somewhere with a sound system that works as well...
airplaneskyward: (sigh)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-06-13 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"There was a cart of tools during the uh, overgrowth... event..." that he doesn't really want to think about because it was very upsetting finding his boyfriend like that... "And I'm sure they're still around somewhere. I'm pretty sure the Ship wants the plants cleared out, it'd probably give you tools if you asked."

But then: "Holy shit. I mean, um. That would be. Very cool?" His voice goes up into a squeak. Private Hatsune Miku concert??????? Oh god oh god. Be normal. "I, um. I'm pretty sure at least some of the people here would? Appreciate a concert? The girl with the mad hair is a musician, I think, I've seen her with an instrument. And I've seen Mario listening to music on his phone." Does Mario's phone have just like, infinite battery? Whatever, he's Mario, don't question it.
