TEST DRIVE 02

TEST DRIVE

Hello, and welcome to the second Pluviosa Test Drive!

This Test Drive corresponds to Days 4-12 in the ship calendar, and will run until around the game's next major event. You can get a better idea what's going on in the most recent Game Update which covers Days 5-8. Currently, character IC housing is not in operation yet; it is expected to open on Day 9 (part of the way through the Test Drive period). Otherwise, the ship is largely in the state described on the Setting page and in other game information.

Test Drive threads involving characters who are accepted are considered canon to the events of the game unless otherwise agreed by players/mods. Pluviosa does not do welcome mingle logs nor does it have any kind of in-character welcome information, making your test drive threads your character's arrival to the game setting. That said, mod-run interactions such as formal exploration and/or interactions with the Ship as an NPC are not available on the Test Drive.

It is advised that potential players familiarize themselves with the Premise page, the Rules/Session Zero page, and at least the first few paragraphs of the Setting page. As Pluviosa is a horror game, we especially encourage players to be aware of the content warnings that will be major themes of the game. If you have any further questions, you can ask them on the QUESTIONS header in the comments!

If you're test driving a character, you're welcome to join the game Discord and hang out and meet your fellow players!

ARRIVAL - LIKE THE RAIN

You wake up. You remember waking up, right? In another place, another time...

There's blood running down your fingers. Outside, the rain isn't pounding, yet, just a gentle patter...

Or is it?

As characters gain fuller awareness of their surroundings, they will realize that there is, in fact, no blood on their hands (save any that might have already been there). It feels as though they lost focus for a moment and hallucinated, but the hallucination ended with them somewhere else entirely.

There is not actually the sound of rain. If characters are near enough to a window, balcony, or even a hole in the ceiling, they will find that it is cloudless, beaming sunlight outside. The emptiness in the distance rolls on and on, completely absent any signs of life.

That being, of course, because the signs of life are all in here. Characters might wake up on any of the decks on the upper side of the ship - anywhere that isn't the cafeteria or lounge where previous arrivals spend most of their time is free game. This also means, of course, that they have the jungle of plants to contend with...

LIGHTS ON, SHOW START

Most areas in the ship are dark when characters arrive. That doesn't mean that they stay dark. Occasionally, lights overhead flicker on and off for a few minutes at a time.

The problem with this isn't the lights themselves (cool white and kind of industrial). It's the reaction that the addition of the extra light causes the plants in the dark areas of the ship that's cause for alarm. To describe the growth as explosive isn't an understatement - vines, saplings, and even thicker branches surge with growth, pushing outwards towards the distant sunlight and upwards towards the flickering bulbs.

The growth is sudden enough to take all but the most aware characters by surprise, and if they're in the wrong corner of the room, it's very easy to get tangled up, wedged in by a tree trunk, or otherwise trapped against some corner or wall. If you're lucky and skilled, you might be able to cut yourself out from there (or break down the wall you're shoved up against), but otherwise, there's only one solution left.

Yell like your life depends on it, and hope somebody out there can hear you. And that whoever hears is someone who is inclined to help, rather than leaving you there. Or worse.

Oh, and the lights flicker back off after a few minutes, of course. Hopefully you're not waiting for rescue in the dark (with the smell of mold and the general faint dampness of the forest) for too long.

TILT-A-WORLD

Occasionally, the whole ship tilts.

This is not simply the side to side motion of a ship on the water (or the equivalent motion brought on by the way this particular ship moves); it's an extremely forward or backward tilt that sends things sliding across the floor if they aren't secured by roots or something else. Unlike storm-tossed ships, the tilt is somewhat prolonged - rather than everything sliding back and forth a couple times a minute, the tilt lasts for five, ten, maybe as much as twenty minutes.

Although it's not enough to knock a well-balanced character off their feet, it's quite likely that new arrivals will not be particularly on-balance. And attempting to traverse the ship with the tilt is a tall order... especially when the ship's angle does unexpectedly change... to the exact opposite direction. All that goes up the mountain must go back down, and a glance out the windows reveals that that's exactly what's going on, as the ship progresses across a mountainous landscape without real regard for the concept of mountain passes.

And for characters who have managed to make their way to the "civilized" parts of the ship, namely the cafeteria and the lounge above it... None of the furniture in these areas is secured. The cafeteria carts under the direct control of the Ship don't seem as inclined to go anywhere, but the tables and chairs in the cafeteria and the couches and armchairs upstairs... Well, it's a good thing both spaces are surrounded by railings. Large chunks of tree trunk also still littler the lounge, sliding back and forth and occasionally rolling with great force across the floor.

Better hold on tight.

SOMETHING WHISTLING

While wandering around the ship's interior, characters might occasionally hear a person whistling.

The sound always seems to be coming from just around the corner, but it sounds alive in a way that other sounds don't. Maybe more alive, even, than the rustle of leaves, the occasional drip of water, and the sounds of things sliding back and forth across the grimy, leaf-covered floors. The whistler, whoever they are, doesn't actively respond if called out to - but the whistling does pause, as though indicating that the call was heard, before starting up again.

If characters choose to follow the whistling, they're inevitably led to the same place - somewhere overlooking the great gap down the middle of the ship, whether an internal suite's balcony, one of the bridges crossing between the two halves, or one of the hallways that runs alongside it. Once they're there, there's no whistler in sight; however, characters will be filled with the overwhelming urge to look over the edge of the railing and down into the lower parts of the ship.

Exactly what they experience after looking down varies. Some will hallucinate that they've fallen over the side, feeling their balance go haywire and seeing the floor rushing up to them right up until the moment of "impact," at which everything returns to normal. Some will feel a stranger's hands on their shoulders, threatening to push them over with a great shove that goes through them with incorporeal fingers. Some will just hear unidentifiable laughter right up close to their ears, and experience the distinct sensation that there's someone laughing at them, in a haha-made-you-look kind of way.

But whatever happens, when they look up, there's no one there - or at least not anyone that physically close to them. The one good thing about being drawn to the middle section of the ship by whatever prankster this is is that it makes it a lot easier to run into people if you're all drawn to the same, highly visible place.

And at least the other person is flesh and blood, right? Probably.

...is he sure? "This lowly one... made educated guesses based on similarity to mechanical intelligences he has heard tell of before? But, ah, this lowly one has no way to be certain, he has only spoken to the ship through..." How in the name of fuck does he explain what a speaker is to this man. "...artificial... sound... generators? Through which it projected a voice? This lowly one has seen it in no physical form, only a voice. This lowly one could, ah, show your majesty to where its attention usually dwells, if he wished to, ah, confirm its nature for himself?" Ask the ship if it's a trapped god if you want! That sounds like not his problem!

"We wouldst confirm this for ourselves. We do sense another dragon here." He's... pretty sure. It's weird and something feels very wrong about it. "But we hath found beings that wert merely animated createrures styling themselves more powerful than their station based on absorption of an Endless' essence." He's still not sure how that happened, but he sure did kill it.

He looks around them and then down at his hand wraps - they're still a bit bloody. Something in his expression darkens and for a moment he looks... tired. It's as if the weight of the world suddenly crashes down onto his shoulders and he's only barely keeping himself standing. Then it passes, but his voice does soften ever so slightly.

"We... suppose we shouldst doest thou the common courtesy of informing thou of our name, as there wouldst be no manner in which it would be known - we art aware this is a different world. We art Fou-Lu, God-Emperor and Founder of the Fou Empire. We art also one of the Unfading Ones, known as a dragon or an Endless, worshiped as gods in the world we art summoned to."

Another dragon? He’s also a dragon? Cultivated to human form maybe? Wait didn’t he think someone else’s qi felt like a spiritual beast cultivated to human form. Is fucking Wet Justice a dragon. He doesn’t dare attempt to probe this guy’s spiritual energy in case he can feel it, so he doesn’t know if it’s similar, but. What.

Well, he’s probably not from Teyvat, anyway, none of them talk like this.

GOD-EMPEROR?! Oh fuck his entire life. “A-ah, this lowly one appreciates your imperial majesty’s courtesy! This lowly one is known as Shang Qinghua, Peak Lord of An Ding Peak, of Cang Qiong Shan sect.” The introduction trips automatically off of his tongue without him even thinking about it, but upon reflection, you know what, sure. Shang Qinghua is more equipped for this situation than Shang Beida is. “This lowly one would be of course happy to lead your imperial majesty to where he can speak with the Ship!”

"Thy sect is unfamiliar to us, but if thou art a leader of people then thou art less lowly then we hast originally thought." He tilts his head a little bit, thinking. To be fair, she was hardly lowly and she was a farmer. "Whilst we may hardly speak as equals, there is little need to debase thyself quite so much. Thou hast not offended us." Yet.

He's going to keep an eye on this guy but to be honest he's more confused than angry. "We hath met with tribal and sect leaders many times over the course of our rule. Many of them in the beginning days were... simply looking out for their people. There wert those who wouldst poison the empire to what it hath become now, but we doth not sense any malice from thee as of yet." Overly formal, overly simpering, but none of the carefully malicious wordplay that those who attacked him had used.

"... We must determine if we art alone first and foremost. And then we must determine..." How much should he tell this person? Probably nothing. "... How much of our health remains with us." That's totally non-concerning, yes? Yes.

“This one… appreciates your imperial majesty’s forbearance?” You’re not getting the first person, this is as far as he’s going. “This one simply does not wish to… cause offense, or offer inappropriate familiarity?” Usually groveling at people makes them not want to murder you! Generally!

He’s very non malicious! Look how un filled with malice he is! “This one’s only goal is to live in peace?” With Casper.

How much of his what remains what? Okay we’re not questioning that. “Would your imperial majesty like to be shown to the more, ah, habitable portions of the ship, where its mind may be contacted?”

Look it's good enough. "'Tis appreciated. We art - unfamiliar with most... non-courtly things." He'd had to have her help him in the village so that he hadn't made quite as much of a scene. It'd helped that everyone had tended to like her so they went along with what she'd told them. "If one's goal is to live in peace in another world, we hath little trouble with them."

The world he's been in, however, is another story. "Indeed, that wouldst be both acceptable and preferred." He takes a deep breath and rolls his shoulders back. He can't let his own weariness show. He has to keep going. He needs to get back to the world he was in before.

His Empire must be destroyed.

Shang Qinghua scrambles inelegantly to his feet, tensing in case this invites violence somehow. “Ah, the ca—room we want is… this way, if your imperial majesty does not mind following this one, or this one could direct from behind if your imperial majesty prefers?” He gestures towards the way he came down the hallway and attempts to look nonthreatening. It may now be slightly more obvious that he has a sword.

"We canst follow." They're regal, not totally insufferable. You can relax, Shang Qinghua. (No you can't, but he doesn't know that.) The sword doesn't bother him - many people have swords or guns and even if the other attacked him and even if he managed to hit him he would be unlikely to cause much damage. He would also be unlikely to get a second chance to do it.

He's at least getting used to the rocking now. He's pretty okay with it for the moment, but... hm. Definitely not enough room in here to fly or even fully transform. "And... if there wouldst be a way to acquire some hydration as well, that wouldst be ideal."

“Ah, of course, your imperial majesty. This one will lead.” He starts down the corridor. “Our destination also has some refreshments, including water and tea and fruit juices, as well as food.” Please don’t also be into drinking rice paddies, he’s not sure he can handle that.
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] fallen god)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-26 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why would he drink rice paddies, that's ridiculous. Only a weirdo would do that. "Water shall be sufficient." Tea is... the last time he had tea was right before...

He stops for a moment, but only for a moment. He starts right back up again, but it's enough to be noticeable. "How hath we been summoned here? We met no summoners upon our arrival as we had before."
airplaneskyward: (wet)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-26 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"There is definitely water." Inane and not useful, good job Airplane.

Shang Qinghua can hear God-Emperor Fou-Lu's footsteps falter, and he studiously ignores it. None of his business! He doesn't notice any weaknesses of anyone ever! "I, ah, this one does not know? None of our small company aboard know how we were brought here--from any different worlds--and the Ship claims to not know either, or to know how we all know its language." Oh god please don't be mad about suddenly knowing a language. "This one does not know why we were so summoned, either."
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] waiting)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"... Strange. How very odd. Normally one is greeted after a summoning by their summoners. So there doth be others here, then. How many art in thy company? Art there any commonalities between them?" Maybe he hasn't checked. He wouldn't be surprised.

He's not sure. He feels... strangely empty. He'd felt this feeling for a long time, only to feel that tug in the past few months. To have it pulled away again is... frustrating. "And we imagine thou hast found no way to return as of yet."
airplaneskyward: (wet)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Well over a dozen, your imperial majesty. Most have some kind of... superhuman powers, but not all. We hail from many different worlds, but there are some with worlds in common--there are at least five from a world called Teyvat." He hasn't exactly gone around interviewing people, but he's definitely kept an eye out for common elements.

"...No, your imperial majesty. None have found a way to leave here." Please don't shoot the messenger.
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] grey sky)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-26 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Teyvat... not a world known to us, though our own hast no name in particular." Honestly he's never really given much thought to that. "But what dost thou mean precisely by 'superhuman'? More than mere magical ability?"
airplaneskyward: (wet)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, in this one's world of origin, humans have no magical abilities of any sort?" Goddamnit how does he explain not having powers. Again. "In some of the other worlds, like Teyvat, only a few have powers. In this one's... second world... one must cultivate to have abilities, but most have the ability to cultivate, if not the means. This one is a cultivator. But in this one's, ah, first life, he had no presence beyond the entirely mundane." Please don't question the transmigration too hard oh god. "Many of those here are exceptional in their home worlds, having abilities far surpassing the average individual."
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] distraught)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-26 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he was somehow summoned to another world. This is fine, even if he's not a god. Summonings Happen. He's not going to question it.

"... Strange. As far as it is known to us, mortals hath had the abilities to weave magic. Perhaps it was taught to them by one of the Endless that came before us - that fact is unknown to us."

He can still feel the tension in his body, in every muscle - the damned Hex is still trying to work its way into his being and wrap its claws into his flesh. "... There wouldst not be one amongst thee with qualifications that included spiritual cleansings, would there?"
airplaneskyward: (sideeye)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-26 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"This one believes it varies greatly between worlds, whether it is ordinary for humans to have magic or not."

He. Uh. Well. "...this one is not specifically trained as an exorcist-" he's mostly trained as a fantasy bureaucrat honestly "-but he has enough skill to effect some amount of cleansing or sealing of spiritual energy?" He's got talismans for days! But also uhhhh what is bad enough that Mr. God-Emperor is asking someone he just met if he can fuck with his qi about it? That's sort of alarming thanks!
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] embarrassment)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-26 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"... If thou art not trained specifically as an exorcist then it wouldst be unlikely that thou wouldst be able to cleanse this." Bah, he shouldn't have asked. He just left himself vulnerable. Good job, Fou-Lu. Way to attempt to trust a mortal again. "... 'Tis nothing we canst not endure long enough. 'Tis merely... bothersome."
airplaneskyward: (wet)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"...My, I mean, this one's sealing talismans are good, if your imperial majesty wanted one...?" Damnit. Being useful failed.

"... If thou art sure... we wouldst not object. Any help wouldst be better than none at this point." He's trying to not let this awful energy around him get to him... but he was basically hit with a magical nuke. It's not exactly healthy.

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-05-28 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Shang Qinghua reaches into his sleeve and pulls out a qiankun pouch, then rifles through it for the strongest talisman he has for sealing demonic qi. It's like, probably similar, right? It should work on anything malign, really, it's just any malign energy back home--back in PIDW would be demonic, that's how the setting works. "Is there, ah, a particular location where the problem is most concentrated, your imperial majesty?"
nightmareofdivinity: ([emperor] fallen god)

[personal profile] nightmareofdivinity 2024-05-28 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Unfortunately no. The blast hit the entire forest we wert in, bathing it in the Hex." He examines the talisman with a critical eye, making sure there isn't anything funny about it. He's not sure if he can trust this mortal. There's no reason to trust this mortal - and he knows how tricky they can be with seals and spells.

That was a Hex with a capital letter, okay. "Ah, then, the heart chakra may be the most effective location, if your imperial majesty wishes this one to apply it...?" The talisman is visibly covered in characters about sealing evil and resentment, if Fou-Lu has any ability to read Chinese. Shang Qinghua has absolutely no desire to attempt to pull any kind of funny business on a god-emperor.

He can't quite read Chinese but he can get close enough to read the gist. His language is related enough that he can muddle through. And while he's not quite sure about chakra, 'the heart' is simple enough. He tucks it into his robe and resolves to keep an eyes on his own spiritual energy as well as Shang Qinghua's.

"'Tis an awful weapon. Not one we would hath authorized, were we still in control. How far mortals hath fallen..."

Shang Qinghua grimaces. "People create... terrible things, sometimes." Like whoever forged Xin Mo. Other than, like, technically him. He didn't mean the goddamn thing to be real! But also, this sort of sounds like... a bomb? And regular real alive humans built those. Like... Nagasaki was a thing. So fiction is no defense.

...does it help his case if he's immortal? Hm. His case being: please don't kill me for being a human.

"No one with sense would ever authorize... indiscriminate cruelty, this one thinks." This is intended to condemn Fou-Lu's enemies, but it's entirely possible that he just shoved his foot into his mouth!
