the i n s o m n i a meme

It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

o p t i o n s

01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario.

[Fridtjof spots Adventurine in the hallway and frowns. It's late - the other should be asleep. He walks up behind him, making sure that he's letting his boots clank against the floor so he doesn't scare his little brother.]

[Once he's a short distance away, he calls out softly.]

Aventurine? ... You should be in bed, no? What's going on?

[He knows at least one of the reasons why he's awake, but that doesn't mean that other people should be!]

Alas I lack my usual icons. This will do

Hmmm~? The same could be said for you, couldn't it, my dear phral? [He looks over his shoulder, smiling gently, dark smudges clear under his eyes. And yet...he's wide awake. And he's just...unbearably fond.

He knows Fridtjof is skilled at stealth and hunting. He'd heard his footsteps all the way down the hall. He'd...have to be an idiot to not recognize such a mindful gesture. So his smiles, while tired, are much more genuine here.

He pats next to him on the couch where he sits. He himself is lacking his usual baubles and jewelry, looking rather like a ruffled baby chick curled up in a blanket. If he didn't take the time to look more presentable, then he must have really left his room in a hurry.

The rain running down the window may be a reason why. Perhaps.
] Come enjoy the lovely weather with me. [It would. Help. To have Fridtjof close here, actually...]

[He sits down, hesitating a moment before swapping to his white mage outfit and pulling the robe off, leaving him in an undershirt and trousers. His chest is visible but... he's aware Aventurine doesn't really care. Fridtjof is Fridtjof.]

[He sits and puts an arm around his friend, pulling him close. Running his fingers through Aventurine's hair he hums part of a lullaby, careful to not pull through any tangles all that hard.]

... It rained a lot where I grew up. And where I was stuck for several years. I know it's different for you... but I'll protect you.

[A little hesitantly, he tugs the other to rest against his small chest.]

I've got you, little kit.

[It's like Fridtjof reads his mind or something, not shattering the masks Aventurine instinctively puts up, but...welcoming them, sitting with them and whatever is beneath. Embracing everything that he is, literally and figuratively.

How could the rattled gambler not do the same? He doesn't care what Fridtjof looks like with or with less clothing. It's not like Aventurine's own brand repulses the man, or the scars, the gemstone suffusing them, anything. None of that changes how kind he's been, how when he pulls Aventurine in, he can't help but feel safe. The blonde sighs, humming softly as he curls up and nestles closer.

He's long past being embarrassed about nuzzling into the hand in his hair. It's nice, warm, settles his nerves in reassuring someone is here.
] Mm. Yeah? [He pauses, listening....] ...did it flood often for you then? The rain, that's...it's fine, but... [Maybe he's making himself face it here. Maybe he's watching for floods, making sure it doesn't sweep anyone away when he's not looking.

Hard to fear that much more when being anchored by such soft warmth. So he lets his eyes close in quiet contentment.
] You don't have to, you know. So...thank you. Truly. This...helps. [Thoughts of repayment still rattle around in his brain, which smooth out with each pass of fingers through his hair, when nothing is asked for. He's...still getting used to it, how this works. It's...terrifying, in its own way. Risky.

But he's always been a gambler, hasn't he...he snorts softly, fond.
] I'm not that small, am I? [5 foot nothing little man say what-]

No, it didn't flood. Not very often, that I can recall. The waters stayed within their banks... but in any case we're all right up here. I don't think we're going to get a flood.

[He chuckles a little as his friend seems to relax. Gently he presses his cheek against Aventurine's head, closing his eyes and continuing to stroke his hair. It's calming here for him too... he doesn't get this kind of contact with most people. Not with anyone other than Mykha, and he's usually the one being held in that case. To be able to keep his friend calm... it's a gift, really.]

I know I don't have to. That's part of being close friends, though. Grooming each other, holding each other... it's nice. It's nostalgic. And as for being small... yes. Yes you are.

[Fridtjof laughs a little bit and gives his friend a squeeze.]

Doesn't mean you're any less deadly in a fight, though! You're a fierce one. ... But you don't have to be when I'm around. I'm... I'm here for you. You don't have to be afraid. ... I'll protect you. I swear I will.

[Is it because he couldn't save Gisli, couldn't save any of the others? ... Maybe.]
