Mario's still focused on exploring, but when he hears the sound of someone tripping, he stops and turns to head that direction. He opens his mouth to ask if this person is okay, but then he hears the anguished gasp of-- ah. Someone else is falling prey to that stupid, stupid illusion.
Mario still, no matter what, refuses to let someone believe that their loved one is dead, not when he knows the truth. This time. he's learned a thing or two from his encounter with Mint, so he goes in prepared.
Preparedness meaning: he starts with a small ball of fire in one hand, clutching it to his chest so that it really looks like he's using it for light and not prepared to attack. It illuminates his face, and will cast everything around him in a red glow - but he's not close enough to the person or the "corpse" for it to shed much light, he knows. He'll have to get closer.
The other hand outstretched in, hopefully, a gesture of peace, Mario calls: "Hey, it's alright, I'm-a not gonna hurt you."

It can't hurt to be over-cautious, right?
