Test Drive 01

TEST DRIVE

Hello, and welcome to the first Pluviosa Test Drive!

Rather than a series of prompts that are set after arrival to the game, this Test Drive is instead more of a soft open for the game. That is to say, not only are Test Drive threads game canon, but the Test Drive should be regarded as the "start" of the game chronologically and contains arrival-related events and information.

Or lack of information, as the case in fact is, because there is no greeting party waiting to reassure characters that everything is fine back in their worlds and that they'll get to go home again. (On the flip side, there's no one telling them that their worlds have been destroyed, either.) There is only the ship, the things inside it, the raging storm outside, and what characters can figure out for themselves.

It is advised that potential players familiarize themselves with the Premise page, the Rules/Session Zero page, and at least the first few paragraphs of the Setting page. As Pluviosa is a horror game, we especially encourage players to be aware of the content warnings that will be major themes of the game.

ARRIVAL

(cw: minor blood, visions, storm weather)

The first thing you become aware of is the sound of dripping. Your mind is fogged, as though woken from the wrong part of your sleep cycle. In your daze, you're convinced that the sound of dripping is blood. Yours? Someone else's? You can't be sure. It's dripping from somewhere. It's your fault, whichever it is.

Good. One way or another, you'll be free of this nightmare -

And then, in response to the sound of a crack of thunder outside, clarity returns.

Characters come around as though disturbed from a deep sleep. Once they have shaken off the (vision? impression?) of blood, they will find that the dripping sound, at least, was real. Fortunately, it's only water - rainwater, more than likely, judging from the occasional booms of thunder and flashes of lightning overhead. One hell of a storm, quite possibly the worst characters have ever experienced, is raging outside.

Outside where? Well, outside the ship, of course.

As a general rule, characters wake up in a random room of the first level of the ship below the main decks. Theoretically, this should be a relatively safe, dry place - but with the age of the ship, its state of disrepair, and the number of plants above that have dug their roots into the deck above, leaks are plentiful. Thus, the sound of dripping water is a constant even in enclosed areas - and, of course, the outside of the ship is being pounded by rain in shimmering sheets, adding to the cacophony of noise accented by the thunder.

Even the protective bubble over the deck itself and the balconies of the rooms is having trouble working to keep the rain out - the rain isn't terrifying hurricane levels, but it is steady and water floods steadily down the stairs and over the edges of the gap down the center of the ship. The worst of the wind, too, has been kept out, but occasional gusts send ripples through the rain.

There is no power inside the ship right now and barely any light besides the flash of lightning - although characters may arrive while it is nominally day, the clouds stretching from horizon to horizon have blocked out the sun almost completely. The motion of the ship is also far worse than usual due to the storm winds - it's easy to believe that you are in fact at sea, unless you manage to get close enough to the exterior windows or balconies to be able to see the ship's legs in motion through the cascade of water that runs down the exterior.

SEEING IS BELIEVING

(cw: hallucinations, thinking things that are real are hallucinations)

In the dark, you have to rely on your other senses - hearing, sound, smell. Smell is giving you the best information to start out with - rain, of course, but also mildew, plants, and old metal. (Is that a whiff of blood at the bottom? No, it's because of that bad dream you had messing with your head.)

No one comes to greet you. No one comes to find you. Instinctively, you know - no one is coming. You'll have to save yourself.

Characters will be fully convinced that they are alone until they actually run into another character. Even things that seem like they should be indicative of another person's presence, such as hearing voices or seeing someone shine a light down a hallway - your character will be convinced that that is just a hallucination until they can definitely lay eyes on another person, hear their voice clearly (ie: not half-drowned-out by the rain) or otherwise be certain of their presence.

That isn't to say that hallucinations aren't occurring. All characters, but especially those who are alone, will periodically hear murmuring voices, smell blood, smoke, and other scents reminiscent of destruction, and see what appear to be the flashes of flashlights, flickering lightbulbs, and the shadows of people walking around. These hallucinations fade in and out in intensity, but they always clear up for at least a little while when a character notices the sound of thunder. Given that the thunder is very frequent during the storm (every few minutes), most hallucinations won't last for long.

For most characters, the voices will be unintelligible murmurs. However, if your character has experienced an event of mass destruction at some point in their life (apocalypse or near-apocalypse, destruction of a city, volcano eruption, being the only survivor of a town that was slaughtered, etc), or has a connection to the dead, they will be able to pick out that the voices of the hallucinations are talking about either attempting to rescue people from something similar (eg: a distant voice shouting "there's someone still alive over here!") or, alternately, talking about how everything is lost, everyone is doomed now, etc. They may hear one type of voice or both at different times, at player discretion.

TO RUN ITS COURSE

(cw: dead loved ones, hallucinations/delusions, violence, potential death. THIS PROMPT CONTAINS PVP OPTIONS.)

You're not supposed to be alone. There was someone with you, only a few hours or years or minutes or lifetimes ago. You weren't always alone, and you have to find them.

You'll find them. You do. But not in any kind of condition to keep you company. This lump of flesh is empty now. The plants are already growing over it, reclaiming it. There's blood in the soil, and there's the sound of someone else coming up behind you.

Someone is coming. You'll have to save yourself.

There are various heaps of organic debris that characters can stumble across when wandering around in the dark - piled up leaves, rotted plants, heaps of ferns, moss, and so on. Even solid wood, sometimes - the trunks of small, twisted trees that took root where they might and have grown out from balconies to the exterior or inwards down the jungled crevasse between the two halves of the ship. In the low light, it's easy to literally stumble across them, or mistake them for something else in the brief light of a flash of lightning.

It's the mistaking them for something else that could be a problem. Characters may find themselves absolutely convinced that these heaps of leaves are the body of a loved one - especially if they were wandering around looking for someone in particular. They may or may not accurately perceive leaf cover on the outside of the "body," but unless they dig their hands in enough to be sure of the heap's contents - but who would want to go digging their hands into the body of someone they love? - or they see the shape in clear lighting (which would have to be provided by another character), it will be near impossible to convince them that the pile is just that, and not a corpse.

But that's not the really dangerous part. The dangerous part of all this is that if someone unexpected approaches while the character is in the same room as the 'body,' they may become convinced that the new arrival is responsible for their loved one's death. It doesn't matter how illogical it is on the surface - fear, or rage, or whatever it is that might fuel them will turn on the stranger. And whatever it is that convinces them of this has also turned their fight-or-flight reflex solidly to fight, whether it's for revenge or the last chance at survival for a cornered rat.

Characters so affected will fight until one of the following occurs: If they are led out of sight of the 'body,' they return to their senses (given that they may be inclined to chase the 'perpetrator,' this may be the best non-violent way to resolve the issue). If they are convinced that the 'body' is fake (through physical contact or clear lighting as above), they also return to their senses. And finally, if they kill the 'perpetrator' or are themselves killed or knocked unconscious, the effect ends. In all of these cases, it ends with the sharpness of a rubber band snapped against the skin, and the character is fully aware of their altered mental state and what occurred as a result.

If your character dies as a result of this prompt (and you want that thread to be game canon), please give the mods a heads-up if/when you are accepted into the game. Although this will not count as an 'official' death and will not consume a character's "freebie" revival, there may still be consequences for your character's death.

CONTENTS WORMING

(cw: worms. many worms. not parasitic. just worms.)

It's easy to take a wrong step in the dark. Of course, tripping and falling isn't the worst thing that can happen.

This isn't the worst thing that could happen, either. That doesn't make it any better in the moment - the split-second when the ground erupts and a writhing mass of something slimy doesn't so much crawl out as jump out - but maybe it will make it better later.

You know how worms come writhing up out of the ground during a rainstorm, when the soil is absolutely saturated?

Well, that's true of the soil on the ship as well, except the worms here aren't just common earthworms anymore. They've learned to climb, the slime that they use to wriggle through the soil modified such that they can cause it to turn sticky and squelch their way up walls, ceilings - and anyone they happen to come across. If you step in the wrong place, an entire cluster of them will respond, by clinging to your clothes and body, squirming upwards in a desperate bid to escape the wet soil and the continuous rivulets of water caused by the storm.

Or perhaps you sat down to rest somewhere and felt them creeping - or didn't, until there was suddenly something wet and cold on your bare skin. Or maybe you encountered the worms not through their climbing, but afterwards, when they drop off the ceiling and fall down on your head as the enzyme that renders their slime sticky wears out. However it happens... worms.

Fortunately, they're harmless - aside from being a bit larger than the earthworms a character is likely to be familiar with, and their strange ability to become sticky, these are largely indistinguishable from normal earthworms. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell that in the dark and the wet - this is their native environment, not yours, and anyone would panic at the sensation of worms trying to crawl up them or into dry places in their clothes.

There is an easy solution to this: Because the worms are fleeing the rain in the soil, they won't climb up anything that's just as wet as the dirt they left behind. All a character has to do to become worm-free is get thoroughly soaked, such as by stepping out into the reduced-but-still-pouring rain on a balcony or deck protected by the ship's bubbles. Unfortunately.... Well, then they're wet. And there doesn't seem to be anywhere to dry off any time soon...

FAQ
For information on the general shape and state of the ship, please see the setting page. Please note that mods will not be running investigations during the test drive period.

Q: Do our characters still have their powers/items?

Generally speaking, yes. Characters have their powers intact (with certain exceptions, largely for potential-gamebreak reasons) and whatever items they were carrying at their canonpoints. Please see the FAQ for more details.

Q: My character is dead and/or dying at their canonpoint!

Well... Now they aren't. Specifically, dead characters come back as their most recent 'healthy' state of being (unless they're a type of character that is playable while dead, such as a vampire or a Bleach shinigami, in which case they continue as normal for them); they also arrive already soaked through by the rain, regardless of the location they wake up. Characters who are mortally injured find that their wounds have healed; in place of whatever blood was soaking through their clothes/dripping from their bodies/in their mouth from a Cough of Death, they instead find pure water.

Q: Can my character(s) explore the ship?

Your characters are welcome to explore as much as they're willing and capable of doing in the wet and the rain! However, getting between floors is a challenge in the current weather - with the power off, the elevators do not work, and the stairs are consistently flooded by a cascade of rainwater. However, mods will not be running any official, guided explorations until after game opening.

Q: Is there anywhere dry to rest?

Nowhere is completely dry, but the aft portion of the ship is significantly drier than the middle and fore. The reason for this is that there is a series of partial decks (the residential decks) over roughly the last third of the ship. The rain is fully blocked by the roof overhead, in theory, but in practice the wind and the flooding leave this space only sort of dry. It's possible to find your way here on your own and find some place to sleep that doesn't blow mold spores into your face when you sit down, but it's also darker here, since the lightning's light is also blocked out by the roof.

Q: BATHROOMS?

Unfortunately, the lack of water in the pipes means that the toilets (which can be found relatively intact in most suites, though many are full of standing water) are also not running. Characters get to deal with this issue as they see fit, whether that's using the dilapidated toilets or using a more fertilizer-like strategy.

Q: Is there anything from the game's main info pages that doesn't apply to this Test Drive?

Given that the power is currently off, the Ship (as in the entity) cannot be interacted with on the Test Drive (and characters have no reason to think it's there). Anything else that would require power, such as the elevators or water from the faucets, also does not work.

Q: How long does the storm last?

ICly, it begins to lighten up on the evening of the second day after the first characters wake up, though it is still raining steadily with occasional thunder throughout that night. (Characters will continue to trickle in throughout the duration of the storm, though most arrive before the end of the first day.) The characters will be able to see the sun starting on the third morning - which is also planned to be the game's formal opening, so we won't say more until then!

Q: Do our characters receive anything upon arrival?

Not a thing! Nor do they encounter any kind of informational NPC or anything that gives them a solid idea what's going on. The only exception to this is that all characters experience the dripping-blood related vision/dream/impression detailed in the first prompt of the Test Drive. Additionally, characters who have a unique tie to their world (such as Aerith's connection to the Lifestream in FFVII) will be aware that they're not in their own world anymore.

Q: What are our characters eating?

Since the power hasn't come on yet... Whatever they're adventurous and/or knowledgeable enough to find that doesn't kill them! This can include edible plants and limited amounts of things brought from home (please don't have your character bring 99 casseroles even if your game's inventory system allows it), but mods are not tracking this specifically. Most characters will be expected to be hungry and unhappy but not literally starving come game open. At least there's plenty of water.

Q: I have some specific question I need to ask about my specific character on the test drive!

Please post your question in response to the header comment QUESTIONS below!

"Just be aware of your health," Neuvillette chides gently. It's not his place to make the decision for someone else on their wetness vs dryness, but being wet for an extended period of time does have an effect on human health due to the chill.

(Of course, it's entirely possible that the other man is, like him, not human, and thus his concern is pointless. Neuvillette doesn't think it's ever pointless to show it, though.)

"Unfortunately, as to your question, I have only a slightly better idea than you likely do," he replies. "It isn't my world, I can say with certainty; I suspect it is not the home of anyone else I have encountered, either."

"Aha, I'll be fine. I've been colder! Frequently! Though not usually also damp at the same time. But it's fine! My health isn't that fragile, I am a cultivator. If we could come down with a chill by standing in the rain, half the sect would be dead, either of said chills or because Mu--the doctor had snapped and murdered us all for standing around in the rain and ignoring our health."

Well, okay, definitely in another world! And Fast Wet Blue Man presumably doesn't have any kind of transmigration system about it, if he can just say that! "Do you know why we're here? Does anyone? Have you been in a different world before? I mean, there are some artifacts in my world that can effect portals between worlds, but my pr-- my martial nephew wouldn't dump me through one! His Shizun would stop him, I'm pretty sure! And he doesn't really have a reason to!" Unless he's found out that you're The Author, his brain offers, and oh god, new thing to panic about! Did Luo Binghe find out that it's arguably Shang Qinghua's fault that he's an orphan and his Shizun shoved him into the Endless Abyss?! Shang Qinghua is going to have nightmares about this now, thanks!

It's very fortunate that Neuvillette has a good verbal memory formed of years of listening to testimony, evidence, and other legal arguments. He waits patiently until the other man pauses long enough to take a breath, and then immediately begins going down the mental list of comments he's assembled.

"That's good to hear, though unfortunately I don't believe it applies to everyone. Some, at least, are no more immune to the cold and damp than normal humans." He very deliberately doesn't say are nothing more than normal humans, even though he is thinking it, because aside from Furina, he's actually not certain that he's encountered any such people.

"No one knows of a reason why we might have been drawn to this place, nor have any particular commonalities between us been evident so far. I have never visited another world, though there are those in Teyvat who came there from other worlds; I am fortunate enough to call one of them a friend, so I know a little more about the matter than most." Even most of the Traveler's acquaintances don't know of the Descenders, but that specific term he'll keep to himself.

"Everyone-- oh! The others here! How many of us are there? Do we need to find somewhere dry for the others? Somewhere dry that doesn't have worms in it, preferably? I think I have some sealing talismans somewhere that could keep water out of a room with damaged walls or ceiling!" (Hey, Lucia Corina is a normal human, as far as he knows! Casper's the only one who currently knows she isn't!)

He knows someone from another world--too much to hope that it's a transmigrator, it's probably closer to the current situation, or he would have noted the differences in someone being brought into a different body. Shang Qinghua is honestly still weirded out by being Shang Qinghua in a world that isn't Proud Immortal Demon Way! Not, again, that he's complaining! He really would be regretting standing in the rain if he was in his shitty original body that spent all its time eating instant ramen and hunching over a laptop! "Aha, did they uh, tell you how they arrived? Probably not reproducible in our circumstances, is it."

"Slightly over a dozen, at this point, though I don't believe anyone has a full headcount. There seems to be a tendency to get separated again, otherwise I imagine several of us would have begun moving in packs."

His parting ways with Furina was intentional, sure, but he hasn't been able to find his way back to her. He keeps tripping over other people instead.

"If we find a secure enough location, I'm sure that would be appreciated," Neuvillette says. "I can dry a limited area, but it will not remain so - my ability is simply to banish the water that already exists."

Not to keep it gone - that would require constant concentration on his part, given the constant dripping.

"And I'm afraid not - the Traveler is usually more preoccupied with current events wherever they wind up, and seeking the sibling they've been separated from." Though it is a good question; hopefully one Neuvillette will remember to ask in the future.
airplaneskyward: (lowkey)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-02-04 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, being... separated unwillingly? Is someone separating us? Or something? I did see some weird shadows and lights while I was wandering around hoping I would magically stumble into my king? Are they leading people off? Is something trying to keep us from joining forces? But then why would they have put us all in one place? There are walls and things! They could have just walled us off from each other! Unless they wanted us to feel extra freaked out by being separated, I guess, aha?"

"You have--water control?" Definitely a water demon, or something analogous. His looks certainly wouldn't be out of place as one in PIDW. "That seems very useful in these circumstances, probably! There is a lot of water around to control!" His king could freeze this entire ship into a popsicle if he really wanted to. Shang Qinghua tries to shove that thought away. His king isn't here, no matter how much he wishes Mobei-jun was, and he's got to make the best of his circumstances anyway. Anyway, water control upgrades Fast Wet Blue Man another couple of notches on the Do Not Fuck With scale! Especially in this environment, but there's also water in Shang Qinghua, and he would like it to remain where it is!

Unfortunately for Shang Qinghua, he's not Shen Qingqiu and has never been particularly good at the spiritual arts any more than the martial ones, so he isn't going to be going around turning leaves into fleets of flying knives--the environment isn't doing him any personal favors. He can make decent talismans if he can get somewhere dry enough to write, though! He isn't totally lacking in skills! And he carries some useful miscellaneous emergency supplies!

"That is the odd thing. Aside from the plants and the storm, there has been no sign of native life - certainly not any with the kind of intelligence to pull off such a plan. What everyone has encountered so far seems to be largely hallucinations."

The worms, in fact, are unusually real, in comparison.

"Ah - forgive me for not introducing myself. I am Iudex Neuvillette, Chief Justice of Fontaine, the nation of Hydro - and I do indeed have some ability in manipulating and understanding that element." That might be an understatement, really, but surely it's not important. "Unfortunately, my power is far more limited than usual - the storm raging around us isn't natural, and whatever cuases it in turn impacts my own ability to affect it."
airplaneskyward: (scared)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-02-04 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I guess the worms probably aren't kidnapping us here, unless there's some kind of... giant Queen Mother Space-Tearing Earthworm or something!" He takes a moment to picture that, and then wishes he hadn't. Please don't let him have put that into the world. "But everyone's hallucinating? Are the plants hallucinogenic? I think I've got a cure for hallucinogenic plants here somewhere, maybe..."

Chief Justice? Oh no. That sounds like authority. That sounds like moral authority. That sounds like the kind of person who doesn't like spies and traitors! He hasn't spied on or betrayed anyone here, Shang Qinghua reassures himself. They have no reason to even know that he's a spy and a traitor! Nevertheless, his nerves increase. "Is someone else controlling the storm and keeping you from controlling the water?" Mobei-Jun couldn't always wrest control of ice in the area if Linguang-Jun was controlling it first, after all, no matter how strong his king was. "Can people usually take control of water away from you? Ah, or if the person controlling the water splitting us up, or bringing us here? Have they stopped bringing people here, even? Are new people showing up?" Oh, right, Fast Wet Blue Man had introduced himself! "Ah, I am Shang Qinghua, Peak Lord of An Ding Peak, one of the twelve peaks of Cang Qiong Shan Sect!" That sounds impressive, right? He would like to be impressive! It's hard to become a peak lord, you know! Even of the logistics peak--honestly, possibly especially of the logistics peak! Liu Qingge just flies around fighting things and then fucking off for weeks! Shang Qinghua has to actually teach his disciples how to do their jobs correctly, and make sure everything is going correctly, or the entire sect will fall into chaos and ruin! He really is very important, even if no one respects him!

"I find it unlikely," Neuvillette says, rather than responding to the hypothetical with what he's thinking, which is that if there is such a creature, he will send it the way of the All-Devouring Narwhal with great prejudice. "The storm itself seems to be the only thing of meaningful power I have yet encountered. The hallucination I encountered was very specific - a dear friend dead upon the floor."

"As for the storm... It is angry. That is the only meaningful thing I have been able to determine about it." Which from the tone of his voice (more expressive than his face), Neuvillette doesn't like much at all. "And it would be very unusual in Fontaine to encounter someone with more control over Hydro than I, but my power is partially linked to the Primordial Sea beneath the nation, so it is diminished here in any case."

He inclines his head politely. "It is a pleasure," he says. "Your name reminds me of those of the citizens of Liyue, a nation to the south - am I correct in assuming that your culture presents the family name first?"

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-02-04 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh. You--got one of those too?" Shang Qinghua swallows, remembering seeing his king warm and empty on the floor, his stomach turning all over again, even knowing that it wasn't real. He really, really wants Mobei-Jun. His voice fails him for a moment with the strength of it.

"Is the storm alive?" Scratch the Queen Mother of Space-Tearing Earthworms, that's definitely scarier! Primordial Sea goes into a mental note, that sounds like interesting worldbuilding. Not just the presence or absence of water affecting strength, but the presence of absence of a specific body of water. Anyway, he doesn't like very large things being angry in his direction! He's not a fan of that!

"Ah, yes. Shang is my family name, and Qinghua my courtesy name. Is... Iudex your personal name?" The combination of sounds is certainly unfamiliar enough to sound western in his original world, he thinks. Not that he was ever terribly good at English, but still!
highjustice: (at a distance)

Neuvillette simply nods in response to the question - he does not seem to particularly want to discuss it, and he imagines that the nervous man before him would not want to dwell on the subject either.

"'Alive,' perhaps or perhaps not. But the element of Hydro has a strong affinity with emotions - tears, for example. I can gain information from water that others would not be able to." Really interesting worldbuilding going on here, the kind that would attract millions of fans debating theories and making a wiki detailing every line of dialogue in the game. "Unfortunately, the rage in this storm overwhelms any other information I might be able to glean."

"'Iudex' is a title, of which 'Chief Justice' is a translation." Neuvillette offers. "Neuvillette is my family name; I am generally not in the habit of giving my personal name to strangers. You may address me by either."

Shang Qinghua is not asking shit about who Wet Justice saw dead. And he appreciates not being asked about his! It would be sort of awkward to explain, anyway, even if no one here necessarily has the context to know that a peak lord shouldn't be consorting with demon kings!

Oh god, could Wet Justice read his thoughts if he got water associated with him?! Shang Qinghua makes a mental note in all caps to NEVER CRY ANYWHERE NEAR THIS MAN!!! Even, or perhaps especially, if he's groveling and trying to seem pathetic and not worthy of executing! All thigh-hugging will be tear-free from now on, unless--until he gets home! Anyway, the storm goes down as 'maybe alive, can't rule it out', which is still terrifying!

"Ah! Of course, of course. I am, ah, honored of course to make your acquaintance, Iudex Neuvillette! You seem very--capable!" It's a little intimidating that whoever kidnapped him thought they could take Wet Justice, honestly!

It's fine, Neuvillette also doesn't want to particularly talk about how and why he could so easily believe in his nation's supposed god dead on the floor, either.

"You can relax," he says, trying to keep his voice gentle. "Although the situation we find ourselves in at the moment is unknown, it does not appear to be actively dangerous."

Of course, it's entirely possible that the man is frightened of thunder or some other such, all-too-common fear. No one is immune to such things, in theory. Still, Neuvillette tries to put on the most calming front he can (which isn't very for someone who is already intimidated by him).

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-02-06 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, relax! Yes! He can just relax! He's honestly very squishy, as cultivators go, and his king isn't here to hide behind, and this very fast man is apparently a legal authority! Sure, yes, he'll relax, and tell Wet Justice all about how he spent decades betraying the secrets of his sect to a demon prince!

"That's good! I like things that aren't dangerous!" He laughs, nerves glaringly obvious. "Provided we don't run into the Queen Mother of Space-Tearing Earthworms, we are only wet!"

Honestly, Wet Justice oozes righteousness. It's like having Zhangmen-shixiong try to give him a pep talk. It kind of just makes Shang Qinghua want to produce a stack of important paperwork to hide behind.
highjustice: (at a distance)

[personal profile] highjustice 2024-02-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
He does ooze righteousness, but it's fine. You're outside of his jurisdiction. And he's a judge, not a prosecutor, anyway!

Well, no one can say he didn't try. It seems he'll just have to figure out how to deal with such a nervous person in the short-term, and hopefully in the long term, once Shang Qinghua realizes that Neuvillette, at least, isn't a threat to his safety, maybe he'll calm down.

Moving on, then. "Right now the primary concerns are shelter, food, and information," he says. "A dry place to sleep is probably the most pressing concern for most people."
airplaneskyward: (lowkey)

[personal profile] airplaneskyward 2024-02-06 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Get used to nervousness, because Shang Qinghua is a reigning champion of it!

"A dry place does sound good, as long as it's not full of worms. I can go without sleep or food for quite a while! I have tried to learn anything I can about where we are, but I can't find... much to know. Boat, legs, plants, storm." He grimaces. That's not very useful of him. "I can of course focus on attempting to find additional information!"

Humans truly do come in every flavor under the sun.

"I can persist for quite some time on nothing but water and the occasional nap, myself, but the same cannot be said of everyone here." Most people in fact cannot sleep meaningfully if they're soaking wet and chilly! (This is not a problem Neuvillette has.)

He opens his mouth to continue, but is forced to pause as a particularly forceful crack of thunder interrupts them. After it passes, he says, "I've been informed by several people at this point that there are also some form of ghosts or spirits present, but I have yet to encounter any myself. They may be drawn only to specific people."

Subsisting on water and naps: Points in favor of Wet Justice being if not a demon, something inhuman! Goes on the List.

"I haven't encountered ghosts either. Are they resentful spirits? Do we need to prepare for attack or exorcism? I think I have enough supplies for a few exorcisms, though maybe not enough to exorcise an entire cruise ship worth of ghosts, because that's a lot of spirits. Hopefully it's not that many spirits. Who's been seeing them? Do we know what's different about those they're drawn to or aren't?" He is a cultivator, resentful spirits are actually something he has the training to deal with!

"All knowledge that falls outside of my area of expertise, unfortunately." The matter of exorcisms reminds him of Liyue - there is no such thing in Fontaine. Neuvillette himself is the only one who can hear the angers of the wronged dead in the waters, so to most others, it is a matter of no concern.

"If such matters are within your experience, then I will leave that sort of investigation to you," he says instead. "As one who is familiar with what signs to look for, your investigation would be more fruitful than mine in any case."
